Industry and Energy

Keeping your industrial and energy facilities operational in the face of corrosion of steelwork

Cooling towers
Production plants
Quays
Corrosion of the reinforcement in your industrial and energy sites ultimately threatens the availability, compliance and safety of your facilities. BlueSpine cathodic protection neutralises the corrosion process at the very heart of the structure.
Your challenges — Real-life examples

The risks associated with corrosion for industrial and energy infrastructure

ISSUE 01

Operational losses in industrial and energy infrastructure

In a production unit, every unplanned shutdown represents a cost. When a repair has to be renewed every 5 to 10 years, each maintenance cycle leads to a new shutdown of the installations and further operating losses.

ISSUE 02

Exposure to harsh environments

Industrial processes loaded with chlorides, docks exposed to ocean swell: industrial structures face particularly severe chemical stresses. Aggressive agents penetrate the concrete cover quickly, and corrosion begins there far earlier than in an ordinary atmosphere.

ISSUE 03

Safety, compliance and ESG performance requirements

The durability of your structures is a requirement verified by regulatory authorities and an extra-financial indicator tracked by your management. Rehabilitating rather than demolishing-and-rebuilding or repeating projects strengthens your ESG balance sheet and your carbon reporting (CSRD, scope 3).

Our response

BlueSpine cathodic protection for your industrial and energy facilities

Ensuring the availability of facilities

+
BlueSpine equipment is modular. The protection is integrated in stages, during pre-scheduled maintenance windows, without extending the service interruption. Installation and on-site inspection are made easier, whilst the maintenance window schedules are adhered to. Reinforcement corrosion ceases immediately, and the concrete is gradually decontaminated through chloride extraction and re-alkalisation. Production resumes immediately.

Tailoring protection to each environment

+
Every industrial installation requires a bespoke solution. Our EN ISO 15257-certified experts design the protection system according to the specific conditions and the level of aggressiveness of the environment, ranging from galvanic and imposed currents to the most severe chlorinated chemical atmospheres. The current is continuously regulated, zone by zone, to ensure compliance with the performance criteria of EN ISO 12696 throughout the entire service life.

Meeting regulatory and ESG requirements

+
Our equipment complies with international standards recognised by regulatory authorities: EN ISO 12696 and EN ISO 15257 in Europe, and AMPP SP0290 / SP0408 and CP1 to CP4 in North America. A system designed by our certified engineers has a lifespan of up to 50 years: over its lifecycle, this results in up to 100 times fewer carbon emissions than demolition and reconstruction, and a documented benefit for your CSRD / Scope 3 reports.

What guides us

Is your system showing signs of corrosion?

Diagnosis

Do you suspect that your structures may be deteriorating? BlueSpine’s diagnostic tools enable surveyors and engineering firms to assess the actual condition of the reinforcement prior to your scheduled maintenance stops.

Treatment

A deteriorated structure requiring ongoing maintenance? BlueSpine provides all the components needed for cathodic protection tailored to the building: anodes, a control unit and monitoring system, installed on site by a certified contractor.

FAQ

Your questions, our answers

1. Is it possible to install cathodic protection without halting production?
Yes. On a cathodic protection project, installation is carried out section by section, area by area, without completely shutting down the industrial facility. In contrast, traditional concrete repair work requires several weeks of downtime for each repair cycle, resulting in cumulative operational losses over the asset’s lifetime.

Over a 50-year period, the total cost of ownership for cathodic protection is around three times lower than that of demolition and reconstruction, and significantly lower than a series of traditional repairs. The calculation includes the cost of operational downtime at each stage, which often exceeds the direct cost of the work for an industrial site: a fixed asset is not generating revenue.
Yes. Refurbishing 1,000 m² of reinforced concrete avoids around 180 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent compared to demolition and reconstruction. This figure is traceable and can be used for CSRD reports, CSR indicators and Scope 3 carbon accounting: a non-financial argument that can be published directly.
