Protecting your buildings and public buildings against reinforcement corrosion

Your reinforced and prestressed concrete structures age due to their reinforcement. As a result of carbonation, sea spray or chronic water ingress, corrosion in buildings and public access buildings progresses beneath the concrete surface. Ultimately, this threatens the safety of users, the continuity of service and the value of the property. BlueSpine cathodic protection tackles the problem at its source.

Corrosion: a major concern for your buildings and public buildings

ISSUE 01

Risk to user safety

A hospital that can no longer admit patients, a condominium where residents cannot access their balconies, a swimming pool closed due to waterproofing failure: corrosion directly impacts the quality of life of users. And since conventional repairs do not last, construction sites repeat themselves, with their parade of scaffolding, visual and noise nuisances, not to mention their accumulated costs.

ISSUE 02

Disruption to the building’s operations

Partial closures, restricted access, recurring works: corrosion can disrupt building operations and user comfort. A sustainable treatment strategy limits interruptions and avoids a series of piecemeal repairs.

ISSUE 03

Deterioration of built heritage

A building is the primary asset of a condominium; a public facility, an investment to be amortized over several decades. A facade renovation restores aesthetic appearance but does not treat corrosion. It resumes around repaired areas in the years that follow and, cycle after cycle, your property loses considerable value.

BlueSpine cathodic protection for your buildings and public buildings

Stop corrosion without interrupting use

The BlueSpine  material is modular and can be adapted to the site. The installation is carried out segment by segment for a parking lot, facade by facade for a condominium, from the technical room or at night for a swimming pool. Everything is designed to facilitate installation, site inspection, and to limit the duration of operations. The oxidation of the reinforcements stops instantly. Concrete is depolluted over time by extraction of chlorides and re-alkalinization. The building remains in service and the comfort of users is preserved.

Ensuring repairs and refurbishments are long-lasting

Each building requires custom-tailored protection. Our experts certified EN ISO 15257 define the anode combination suited to your structure: carbon paint on the underside of coastal balconies, galvanic anodes in carbonated guard railings, discrete anodes for load-bearing elements of a parking garage. Facade renovations, waterproofing, and surface treatments are thus made permanent.

Preserving the value of our heritage over 50 years

A BlueSpine installation designed by our certified experts complies with international standards recognized by control authorities (EN ISO 12696 and EN ISO 15257 in Europe, AMPP SP0290 / SP0408 and CP1 to CP4 in North America). Designed to last up to 50 years, it breaks the cycle of successive repairs and the value of your property stops eroding over time.

Does your building show signs of corrosion?

Diagnosis

Are there any concrete spalls, cracks or rust stains on your structures? BlueSpine diagnostic tools enable surveyors and engineering firms to assess the actual condition of the reinforcement before any defects become dangerous.

Treatment

Planning to renovate your façade or repair waterproofing? Don’t forget to address corrosion as well. Façade renovation hides existing flaking but does not stop the corrosion of the reinforcement. BlueSpine supplies all the components required for cathodic protection tailored to the building: anodes, control units and monitoring systems, installed on site by a certified contractor.

FAQ

Your questions, our answers

1. Why is a facade renovation not enough to ensure the long-term maintenance of facades?
A facade refurbishment treats the surface (joints, render, cladding) without addressing the corrosion of the reinforcement, which continues deep within the structure. The repaired areas even create an electrochemical imbalance that accelerates corrosion in adjacent areas (induced anode effect). The result: a facade renovation that needs to be repeated every 5 to 10 years, each time involving scaffolding, visual disruption and noise. Cathodic protection acts directly on the corrosion mechanism to extend the service life of structures by up to 50 additional years.
For a car park or residential building, a forced-current system typically draws around 100 watts continuously, which is equivalent to a small domestic fridge. At the average electricity rate, this amounts to less than €100 per year. Galvanic protection systems, on the other hand, require no external power supply and therefore consume no electricity.

No. The currents used are very low, with a voltage of less than 50 V. The anodes are never exposed to the open air: they are either embedded in the concrete (Ti MMO strips, discrete anodes) or protected by a coating (carbon paint). Cathodic protection poses no risk of electrocution, generates no detectable electromagnetic fields and presents no contraindications for public buildings or residential properties.
